Rahul Gandhi has been convicted; Rahul Gandhi has been sentenced to two
years imprisonment; Rahul Gandhi’s sentence has been suspended; Rahul
Gandhi has been disqualified from the Lok Sabha; Rahul Gandhi has been
asked to vacate his 12, Tughlaq Lane bungalow in 30 days — these
headlines have bombarded news screens and newspapers for a good portion
of last week. The unfolding events made the week look strained and
stretched.
Many, not just those who are officially with the Congress,
have felt that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), particularly the
champion pair of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and home minister Amit
Shah, have proverbially shot themselves in the foot with this move of
extreme vindictiveness. The duo with their unmatched hubris, it is being
said, have handed it over to the Congress. They mean that this will
trigger the political revival of the Congress. There is little doubt
even in the minds of those evergreen doubting Thomases who have little
faith in the abilities of the Congress that the offence was small but
the punishment way too excessive.
